Database Reorganization in Parallel Disk Arrays with I/O Service Stealing

چکیده
_ ,t 7 £ c_FWe present a model for data reorganization in parallel disk systems that is geared towards load t)ahmcing m an environment with periodic access patterns. Data reorganization is performed by disk cooling, i e., migrating files or extents from the hottest disks to tim coldest <mes. \Ve develop an approximate queueing model for determining the effective arrival rates of cooling requests and discuss its use in assessing the costs versus benefits of cooling actions.

Dynamic Multiple Parity (DMP) Disk Array for Serial Transaction Processing
ÐThe performance of today's database systems is usually limited by the speed of their I/O devices. Fast I/O systems can be built from an array of low cost disks working in parallel. This kind of disk architecture is called RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks). RAID promises improvement over SLED (Single Large Expensive Disks) in performance, reliability, power consumption, and scalabili...
متن کاملExternal Memory Algorithms and Data
Data sets in large applications are often too massive to t completely inside the computer's internal memory. The resulting input/output communication (or I/O) between fast internal memory and slower external memory (such as disks) can be a major performance bottleneck. In this paper, we survey the state of the art in the design and analysis of external memory algorithms and data structures (whi...
متن کاملAn Analytical Performance Model of Disk Arrays under Synchronous I/O Workloads
All server storage environments depend on disk arrays to satisfy their capacity, reliability, and availability requirements. In order to manage these storage systems efficiently, it is necessary to understand the behavior of disk arrays and predict their performance. We develop an analytical model that estimates mean performance measures of disk arrays under a synchronous I/O workload. Synchron...
متن کاملJovian: A Framework for Optimizing Parallel I/O
There has been a great deal of recent interest in parallel I/O. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of the Jovian library, which is intended to optimize the I/O performance of multiprocessor architectures that include multiple disks or disk arrays. We also present preliminary performance measurements from benchmarking the Jovian I/O library on the IBM SP1 distributed memory ...
متن کاملPrinciples of Transaction-Based On-Line Reorganization
For very large databases such as those used by banks and airlines, cost considerations may forbid shutting down the service for a long period of time and reorganizing off-line. Similarly, the size of the database may preclude constructing another copy with the desired organization on another disk collection. Such databases need incremental on-line reorganization. References to records occur in ...
